Yellow Bowl Project Student Writings

Through integrated course assignments, students from Arts Management, Fine Art, and English/Communication classes composed responses to Setsuko Winchester’s Freedom From Fear / The Yellow Bowl Project. Selected essays, poems, works of prose, and text-based artworks were presented in a reading at MCLA Gallery 51 on October 26, 2017 and published in a zine shared here. This opportunity guided students to consider their personal understandings of the prompt “Who gets to be an American?,” chosen through conversation with the artist to further the conceptual framework of the exhibition and program at MCLA. The works created share personal histories, as well as reflections on past and current immigrant experiences in America.
